FREE Eye exams at Taste of Addison! #seemoresights

My family recently took a trip to the Discovery Garden and Butterfly Garden in Dallas, TX.  My children loved to see the colors of the butterflies, the flowers in bloom, and eh, the hissing cockroaches.  Besides the roaches, the sites were beautiful!  It was fun to identify the butterflies flying around the building with those on the guide and pamphlets we were handed when we entered the attraction.

It’s always exciting to watch the joy in my children’s face, knowing they just experienced something they will remember forever.  I cherish these moments!

It hurts me to think there are some people who are unable to see these moments.  Anything further than 4 feet away is very blurry for me, and I struggle to make things out.  I wear glasses and contacts daily, if not, I would miss out on so much.  I also take care of my sight by having regular eye exams.   My insurance is wonderful, fully covering yearly exams, as recommended.

If it is time for your yearly check-up, you can get a FREE eye exam this weekend from Transition Lenses, in partnership with Essilor and First Eye Care.  The Sightseeing City Tour stop will be in Dallas at Taste Addison this weekend, May 18-20, 2012.  Attendees can come by the booth for the Ultimate Sightseeing Experience to get free vision screenings for the whole family!  You will also have the opportunity to get your photo taken in front of a scenic backdrop and the chance to win prizes and giveaways!

Again, FREE vision screenings for your entire family with admission to Taste of Addison.

Unusual Bacon Desserts. #CBias #SocialFabric

Bacon is one of my family’s favorite things to eat.  My husband loves it on his hamburger.  My son loves it for breakfast.  Me, well I could eat it anytime.  So when given the opportunity to do this #TXBacon shop, I was in!

I looked at dessert recipes and was amazed at the various recipes for bacon dessert.  From bacon pancakes to chocolate covered bacon, there are a bunch of recipes available for making.  I decided on candied bacon and chocolate covered bacon, and knew my neighbors would be knocking on the door to try some!

I went shopping at HEB to buy ingredients for the dessert, including Petit Jean bacon.  I also needed some fruits and vegetables, since the produce department at HEB is wonderful and offers a great selection!

It was easy to spot the Petit Jean meats, as the labels show their support for the Dallas Cowboys.  (Would you think otherwise, living in Texas?)

I came home and couldn’t wait to get started with the Candied Bacon!  I began by gathering my ingredients, including the recipe.

Candied Bacon

You will need:
Bacon
Brown Sugar
Parchment Paper or a SIL Pat
Salt to taste.

  • Begin by lining your baking pan with parchment paper or a SIL pat.
  • Lay your bacon flat on the parchment paper, making sure the sides do not touch.
  • Sprinkle brown sugar on the bacon.  Use about one teaspoon on each slice.
  • Set the pan in a cold oven, and set your oven timer for 20 minutes.
  • Heat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Watch the bacon as the oven heats up.  Pay close attention when there is only 2 minutes left on the timer.  Don’t let your bacon burn.
  • Remove from the oven, and lay on paper towels to drain.  Immediately sprinkle lightly with salt.
  • Break the bacon into pieces and enjoy!

I also decided to make some chocolate covered bacon.  (Oh yeah!)

Chocolate Covered Bacon

You will need:
Bacon
Chocolate Almond Bark

  • Simply fry your bacon in a skillet, until desired crispiness.
  • Drain the bacon on paper towels, to absorb some of the grease.
  • Melt one block of almond bark in the microwave for 70 seconds.  Stir.
  • Dip the bacon in the chocolate and set aside to harden.

Rascal Flatts “Changed”.

Rascal Flatts’ newest album, Changed, hit stores on April 3rd. The trio, comprised of singer Gary LeVox, bassist Jay DeMarcus and guitarist Joe Don Rooney, have evolved after being in the spotlight as some of country music’s biggest superstars.

Changed is their eighth studio album and their first with brand new material in two years. Since their musical debut in 2000, the band has sold over 21 million albums, 25 million digital downloads and delivered 13 #1 singles to the top of the charts!
Changed is full of the band’s high-gloss harmonies, songs that speak to our hearts, and above all, their desire to push themselves to bring more to the table with each record.
Rascal Flatts has always been one of my favorites!  (And my children love “Life is a Highway”, which was featured in the movie Cars.)  One day I will see them in concert.  One day!  ::fingers crossed::   They have sold more than 21 million albums and 25 million digital downloads.  Rascal Flatts have seen 13 singles hit the top of the charts, and have spent more than eight months at #1.  They give us songs that touch our lives, and that’s what we like to hear.  Something we can relate to.
Listen to the song Banjo (Sure to get your toes tapping!) Or take a look at the tour schedule!

How would you like to win a trip to see Rascal Flatts?  They’re giving away airfare, hotel, tickets and meet & greet passes for two lucky fans to see Rascal Flatts on their summer American Band tour, which kicks off this June with the Eli Young Band, Little Big Town and Edens Edge.  Contest ends April 30,2012.

Disclosure:  I was provided a copy of the CD “Changed” to review, prior to writing this post.  No other form of compensation was received.  All opinions are my own.

Thanks!

When was the last time you told someone thank you?  Those two little words have the power of one thousand!

Today, I received a surprise thank you in the mail (mmm, chocolate covered fruit!) from a brand I recently worked with.  I also received a message noting I would be receiving the above pictured TY plushie Alvin doll from TY and Fox Home Entertainment for participating in a recent project!

Kindness is contagious.  :)

Campus Book Rentals.

I recently came across some “old” textbooks from college.  You know, the ones you pay so much for, and use for a short while?  Yes those.  (Why I never sold those books back for an extra $5, I will never know.)  Now, years later, I realize I should have rented the books to begin with!

You can save so much money by renting!  (Trust me, you will never look at them again!)   Take a look at this video from Campus Book Rentals:

Campus Book Rentals has the largest selection of textbooks in the nation, and here are a few more great perks the company offers:
-save 40-90% off of bookstore prices
          -free shipping both ways
-you can highlight in the textbooks
          -flexible renting periods
-donations made to Operation Smile with each textbook rented  (see more information below!)
They even compare their prices to those on Amazon!  Take a look here!

Through their Making a Difference Program, Campus Book Rentals have teamed up with Operation Smile, an organization that performs life changing cleft lip surgeries on children whose families could not otherwise afford it. They have committed to donating money to cover a minimum of 1,000 life changing surgeries. Your rental could help them do even more than that. A portion of every book rented goes towards helping children in need!

Be sure to visit their site, where you can read reviews, get pricing information, sell your text books or find more information!

Have Fruit? Make these Easy Smoothie Kits!

Last year, I posted a recipe for homemade fruit roll-ups.  They were so easy to make, and my children love them.  (Plus, it can be an easy way to use up that fruit that may be over-ripe.)

Today, I want to share my recipe for Smoothie Kits!  They are easy to make, and the combinations are endless!  They are cheaper than the pre-made kits in your grocery store’s freezer, too!

On my trip to the store, I purchased bananas, strawberries, a mango and two containers of blueberry yogurt.  These were the fruits that were on sale, and I paid $3.72 for everything.

I started by pouring the yogurt into an ice cube tray.  Let this freeze for a few hours or overnight. I then cleaned and prepared the fruit.  It doesn’t have to be perfect, but the process will go quicker if everything is ready for you.  I also took the yogurt out of the ice cube tray, and cut each cube in half.  (Just to make it easier on my blender.)

From there, I put two halves of frozen yogurt in a Ziploc bag, then added one cup of mixed fruit.  Again, there are so many combinations!  You can have mango strawberry blueberry.  Strawberry blueberry banana.  Blueberry banana…. the list goes on, depending on what you add to that bag.

When the bags are filled, be sure to write the date on the outside, and flatten the bag before freezing.  (This makes it easier on the blender, too.)

When you are ready for a smoothie, just take out a bag, drop the contents to your blender with a tablespoon or two of juice or milk, and enjoy!

These are great for snacks, on-the-go or an easy breakfast!

Disney on Ice Dare to Dream!

Last week, we took a trip to the magical world of Disney with Disney on Ice’s Dare to Dream.  I think this could have been “the best” Disney on Ice production, but then again, Disney is sure to please.  (And I enjoy them all!)

My family attended the opening night performance in Dallas, TX.  We were greeted by Mickey, Minnie and “the gang”, who began to share stories about their friends, the princesses.  We were soon introduced to Tiana, Cinderella and Rapunzel.

The Disney on Ice cast of world-class skaters were amazing, bringing us into each of the stories.  Dare to Dream had the complete attention of my daughter and youngest son, but pulled in my oldest son (7), too!   *For the record, my 7 year old was very hesitant about going to the show because it was “all about princesses”.  Ten seconds into the show, however, he was just as interested as my daughter!  Throughout the show, there are evil stepmothers, animals, “bad guys” and flying princesses!  We all enjoyed the production!

You can still catch a few performances in the Dallas, Texas area:

Sunday, April 1 1:30pm and 5:30pm.
Tickets are available at the Ticket Master website or by phone at 1-800-745-3000 as well as at the arena’s box office.
Tickets are $75 (Rinkside), $45 (VIP), $30 and $15.  All seats are reserved.

PayPal Is An Option Through Coinstar! #cbias

PayPal is now an option at Coinstar kiosks!  You can take your coins to a Coinstar machine and add them to your PayPal account balance!  You can withdraw money from your PayPal account, too!

I use PayPal all the time!  I send money to family and friends, make online purchases and use it for business purposes!  There is always a little money in my PayPal account, because it’s so convenient!  It’s nice to know I can immediately add or deduct money from PayPal, while doing some grocery shopping at Albertsons.

I told my children we would be visiting the Coinstar “machine” on our next shopping trip, and they were super excited!  We have always seen the kiosk, but have never used it!  This is a great experience for all of us!

My children immediately began looking for coins and collecting them in a bag, in preparation for our shopping trip.  After two days of collecting, and asking my husband to empty his pockets and truck console, they had collected roughly 100 coins.  (It was fun leaving random coins around the house for them to find, too!)

We headed to our local Albertsons, where I knew there would be a Coinstar kiosk waiting for us.
The Coinstar kiosk is located in the front of the store, near the Redbox machine and newspapers.  If you’re going out for a movie or the Sunday paper, this is like a one stop shop!  The kiosk is clearly marked, with several advertisements showcasing the new PayPal feature.
The kiosk is easy to navigate with several Coinstar options to choose from.  I pressed the PayPal button!

I was asked to enter my PayPal email address, which I did, and the kiosk searched for my account. It took about five seconds to access the PayPal database, then my children were able to start dropping the coins in.  Any coins that are rejected or not recognized by Coinstar are immediately given back to you.

As you are adding the coins to the kiosk, the Coinstar converts them, noting any applicable fees.  When you are done, the kiosk presents a screen of Terms and Conditions, and proceeds with a receipt for your deposit if you accepted the terms.  We were then given a notice, to tell us the PayPal transaction had been complete.  The entire process took about five minutes.  Coinstar was easy to use, and very convenient.
It was even more convenient that the kiosk was in a grocery store.  One we visit often.  Our “Friday Family Snack” will be fruit salad, so we had some shopping to do afterwards.  I picked up a few things for our weekend dinner while I was at the store, too.  (Albertsons has been putting coupons on the products for you, so keep an eye out!)
