Meet The Future In This Raffey Cassidy Tomorrowland Interview

I received an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles for the coverage of several events for Disney’s Tomorrowland. All opinions are 100% my own.

While I was in Los Angeles, I had the opportunity to sit down with Raffey Cassidy, who plays Athena in Tomorrowland.  Starting her career at a young age, Raffey can also be seen in films like Snow White and the Huntsman and Dark Shadows (2012).

With a British accent and a vocabulary as big as a 40 year old, Raffey Cassidy showed how smart, graceful and adorable go well together.

We started the interview by asking what pondered her to get into acting at such a young age.

Well, my brother went for an audition, and then they asked me if I wanted to have a go at that. So I had to go and then it kind of started from there!”

…which led to our asking of how Cassidy became involved in this particular film.

I just went up for an audition, but it was a self-tape at home.  Then I went to London to do another screen test. And then I went to America to do another screen test. And then I found out that I got the part!”

…she went on to say:

“Athena has so many different qualities. She’s optimistic. She’s intelligent. She’s wise, and I just kind of put all of those together, and I always had an image in my head for a scene, so, it was never just go in cold into it and try to create one in my head. I always had an image that would just help me and I’d always be able to think of that to get me through the scene.”

Of course we wanted to know what her first scene in Tomorrowland was.  Then, we asked about her most favorite scene to shoot.

“Oh, my first scene… It was in the world’s fair when I was watching young Frank getting on the bus. … My favorite scene to shoot was probably the blast from the past sequence. I really liked that because  it was a lot of action!”

With such poise, Raffey Cassidy answered each question, leaving us for more.  We asked her about her biggest take-away from the film, which left me, in particular, inspired even more.

“Everybody should be very optimistic and feel that there’s a way around situations if they’re in a bad situation. There’s always a bright side.”

George Clooney was talking about the scene where you drive the truck. So what were your feelings on driving the truck and learning to do all that?

I really enjoyed it. It was so fun because I’ve worked with amazing people, and so they actually taught me how to drive and, and there was a scene where I had to go down a ramp and then stop. I think really I started to get a little too confident, and I got too close. Britt just went stop, because it got so close.”

How was it working with George Clooney?  Did you know of him before?

Well I’d seen the Descendants and I really, really liked it. And George is just so down-to-earth and, and I learned so much from him. And he’s so professional, but really fun at the same time.”

What’s the message that you would tell girls your age about the future?

“Well, I’d say the future isn’t a place we’re going. It’s something we’re making, so it can be anything that they want it to be. It makes me think about the future now and, and how optimistic we can all be and, and how we can make it what we want. Maybe I can make a difference in the world.”
As I go back through the recording, I recall her accent and confidence.  You can tell Raffey Cassidy had a great time filming Tomorrowland, and she must be commended for a job well done.
